Miss Kyrgyzstan has been barred from taking part in this year’s Miss World beauty pageant, after an onstage spat involving the judges and the event’s sponsors.
Nazira Nurzhanova, 24, sashayed effortlessly to victory in last Saturday’s competition at the National Opera and Ballet Theatre in Bishkek, the capital of the unruly former Soviet Republic.
Indeed, she so impressed the jury that several could not wait for the sponsors to come on stage to present the prizes, and instead leapt up to present them themselves.
The sponsors, left fuming awkwardly at the side of the stage, responded by withdrawing from the competition, and cancelling the certificates.
“Because of several infringements, the representatives of Miss World in Kyrgyzstan are not ready to send the winner on the international competition,” Interalliance KG, the event’s organiser said this week.”For several reasons beyond the control of the organisers of the evening, the competition was not quite as originally planned.”
The disqualification is somewhat of an embarrassment for the fledgling democracy, whose bigger, richer neighbour, Kazakhstan, is vying for the right to host the competition in 2011.
According to the official website of Miss World, a new representative for Kyrgyzstan will be chosen on July 15th.
