MISS UNIVERSE GREAT BRITAIN 2011 CONTESTANT - Kerry Mitchell

I'm 24 from Liverpool and live at home with my mum and brother. At six weeks old I was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis which has meant I've spent many years in and out of hospital and have to take more than 100 tablets a day and have physiotherapy twice a day as part of my routine. I also exercise to keep well and have a high calorie diet. I'm a beautician and I'm also studying floristry at college which i love i hope to have my own florist shop once I qualify. I'm a bubbly girl who's friendly and easy-going and loves a laugh. I’m a positive person with a positive attitude! I love travelling and site seeing and meeting new people. I love shopping and doing fashion shows for local up and coming designers. Pageants are new to me but I'm loving them too! I also help run a club for adults who have special needs which I've been doing every week for the last 10 years. Charity work and fund raising has been part an important part of keeping this club going. With my condition, I am particularly aware of the importance of fund raising.

MISS UNIVERSE GREAT BRITAIN 2011 CONTESTANT - Emma Machin

Through pageants I have held a variety of titles and through acting I have played parts in Shameless, Britannia High, Blue Murder, and Boy A. I have also performed as an assistant for a world-renowned magician, Andrew Van Buren. This enabled me to travel all over the UK raising money for multiple charities, through a Circus starr winter magic charity tour. I was the first UK resident to train with the Moscow State Circus, my speciality being in Aerial Silk work. I have attained Honours awards in dance, and trained in Modern Jazz, Tap, Freestyle, Rock & Roll, Cheer Leading and Irish dancing. I also studied in Beauty Therapy achieving an NVQ2, this led to me managing my own salon. As I am petite, my aims include breaking the stereotypical view of models seen today and would like to Inspire other young women, by giving them belief in themselves to reach their goals. I also aim to continue to help others through charity work, bringing me closer to new people and their diverse cultures. I am passionate, enthusiastic and would embrace any opportunities that being successful in Miss Universe GB would bring.

MISS UNIVERSE GREAT BRITAIN 2011 CONTESTANT - Hannah Lloyd-Calam

I have a strong academic skill set of which I am very proud; 4 A* grades and 8 A grades for GCSE, 4 A-levels in Maths, English Literature, European History and Dance. I have a passion for dance, which developed from an early age and since I have been awarded a full scholarship for full time study at the prestigious arts school: Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. Currently, I am in my second year of study and hope to leave the school and live my dream of working in the West End! My favourite musical is ‘We will rock you’ and to be involved in the production would be an honour. While studying performing arts I also work at ‘Abercrombie and Fitch’ which has been great to widen my business experience but has also enabled me to socialize with lots of different people and make great friends. I love spending time with my mum and we often do charity work together. Recently, we have raised more than £1,000 for the Variety Club North West through various car-boot sales and sponsorship. I also intend to run the Cancer Research race for life later in the year and raise money for Cancer Research UK in memory of my Grandma. I am ecstatic to have been chosen as one of the finalists for Miss Great Britain and can’t wait to take part in such a fantastic event!

MISS UNIVERSE GREAT BRITAIN 2011 CONTESTANT - Grace Levy

I am currently in my final year of university studying Psychology with hopes of one day becoming either a professional counselling or criminal psychologist. I love being able to help people emotionally, as when you believe in yourself you truly can do anything. I also mentor underachieving and underprivileged teenagers in my local school to help them widen the aspirations of their future and to give them confidence in reaching for it. I am a dedicated, sincere and fun-loving person who puts all my energy into what I believe in. I am a very sociable person and love meeting new people and experiencing new places and cultures. One of my ambitions is to travel to the Amazon rainforest and go back to the basics of life without the materialistic things modern day life forces upon us. I love to read and write, and I have played the clarinet up to grade 8 standard, but my favourite talent is knowing Michael Jacksons ‘Thriller’ dance routine beginning to end!

Honesty, integrity and positivity are values that are important to me. I have always set high standards in my life and have drawn much inspiration from my family, friends and life experiences. My personal development has been harnessed by the exposure to a diverse range of environments and opportunities. To date, I have achieved much in my professional life while simultaneously pursuing my interests in various media projects and contributing actively to the community. In my spare time I enjoy dancing, reading, watching movies and going to the gym. My major weakness is being creative especially with food and cooking up a storm! I feel that my unique background has allowed me to challenge traditional thinking with a combination of resilience, thoroughness and enthusiasm in all that I do. With a friendly, hard-working and positive approach, I would thoroughly embrace the responsibilities and commitments Miss Universe GB will offer.

Beauty pageants are the Olympics of role models” - Miss USA 1983. Ambition, compassion, grace, positivity and intellect, I believe are essential qualities to becoming a good role model for young women; qualities which I feel I possess. I am a naturally inquisitive person and I love to learn; not only on an academic level but culturally too. I think being globally aware is a fundamental attribute to becoming a potential Ambassador for both Wales and Great Britain. After gaining all A*’s, A’s and 2 B’s at GCSE, I went on to study A-levels in Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. I have always had a passion for figures and problem solving, so naturally I chose a career path which reflected that. I am currently studying Accounting and Finance, in Cardiff. Following this, I wish to further my career by completing a Masters Degree in Forensic accountancy; a field I find fascinating yet challenging. For the past 10 years I have been working to raise money for a cause close to my heart. After losing my Nan to a lengthy battle with cancer, my mother and I decided to give a little back to those who looked after her in her final days. Together we set up a small charity, whose concern was to raise money for the local chemotherapy unit. I also have a keen interest in sport, competing regionally in both swimming and athletics. As well as this I have been privileged enough to play rugby in the Millennium Stadium during a junior Ladies Welsh tournament, three years ago. I look forward to the final and the opportunity to take the title of Miss Universe GB.

Former Miss Russia arrested for accusation of stealing drugs

By Jonathan Allen

NEW YORK | Tue Apr 12, 2011 4:22pm EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- A former Miss Russia faced drug charges for a second time on Tuesday, allegedly using stolen prescription pads to obtain painkillers and anti-anxiety drugs from pharmacies in New York.

Anna Malova pleaded not guilty in state Supreme Court in Manhattan to 44 charges of petty larceny, forgery and criminal possession of controlled substances.

The indictment compiled by the city's Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor includes 11 instances in which Malova allegedly forged prescriptions to obtain the painkiller Vicodin and the anti-anxiety drug clonazepam, which is marketed as Klonopin, using pads she stole from two psychiatrists she had been seeing.

The former beauty queen had been arrested in 2010 on similar charges in a case brought by the Manhattan District Attorney's office. That case is still pending.

The Office of Special Narcotics Prosecutor began investigating Malova after one of the psychiatrists reported the theft of her pad.

Malova was crowned Miss Russia in 1998, and was a top-ten finalist in the Miss Universe pageant later that year. She later moved to New York to work as a model, said her attorney, Robert Gottlieb.

She had originally trained as a doctor in Russia but was not licensed to practice in the United States, he said.

The judge agreed on Tuesday to a request by Malova's attorney that she be evaluated for the state's judicial diversion program, in which she could avoid a potential jail sentence and have the charges dismissed, instead getting court-monitored treatment for drug addiction. The prosecution did not object to the evaluation.

"She has already begun very serious rehabilitation long before the indictment today," Gottlieb told Reuters after the hearing. "She has participated in in-patient treatment at a highly reputable treatment centers."

He said he hoped that Malova would be able to enter into the judicial diversion program without having to enter a guilty plea.

"She's not a citizen so in order to avoid her being deported we want to have criminal charges dismissed," Gottlieb said, adding that Malova is living in the United States on a green card that grants permanent residence.

MISS UNIVERSE GREAT BRITAIN 2011 CONTESTANT - Leena Kharbanda

I graduated from Kings College London with a degree in geography and politics. As part of my degree I travelled to the backwaters of India and researched how the villagers lived sustainably. It was a truly great experience. I thoroughly enjoy travelling and learning about differing cultures that make up our world today. Another big passion of mine is cooking and so at the age of 22 I made use of my entrepreneurial skills to launch a well-known cupcake shop. It is with drive and determination and a love of meeting new people that has allowed it to be successful for the past three years!! Currently, I'm in the midst of writing my own cookbook! My interests include perfecting my French speaking skills, keeping up to date with world political issues, practicing bikram yoga and kayaking in the Caribbean! In the future my career ambition is to be a successful communicator and positively help others. From a young age, integrity, compassion and caring for others are family values that have been instilled in me. I consider myself to be a friendly, hard working and a confident women, and it is with this mind set that I have decided to take part in miss universe GB. MISS UNIVERSE GREAT BRITAIN 2011 CONTESTANT - Daljit Kaur

I was raised by a very entrepreneurial family and have also gained a lot of knowledege about the world of commerce thanks to my business degree at the University Of Hertfordshire. One of the reasons for this choice of career is because it holds many possibilities for the future. I have taken time outside my degree to pursue my dreams of becoming a model and have been lucky enough to be a part of the pageant industry. I have really enjoyed my journey into Miss Universe GB so far! I have a strong belief in charitable giving and like to be able to make a difference in peoples lives, especially to those that are less fortunate. I have used this opportunity to help raise money and awareness for several charities by holding many different events. I am a very honest and loving person with many ambitions in life and will continue to work hard to drive to succeed them. It would truly be an honour to be able to represent Great Britain in Miss Universe and to be able to do my country proud. I look forward to the event in May and to meeting all those inspirational people

MISS UNIVERSE GREAT BRITAIN 2011 CONTESTANT - Elizabeth Greenham

For the past three years I have been hard at work on a degree in Mathemarics! However, this April, my studies will be over and my main focus is MISS UNIVERSE GB and I could not be more excited! Alongside my passion for pageantry, I am a keen dancer and I train in a variety of styles from ballet and tap, to popping and commercial street! I am also a budding violinist, and regularly rehearse with an orchestra and a band. Supporting me in all I do is my fabulous family who go to any lengths to make sure they experience every new adventure with me! My dad is Indian/Portuguese and my mum originates from England, and living in the culturally diverse society that is Britain, I would like to think of myself as a perfect representative for the entire population. This, along with my zest for life and terrible shoe habit has enabled me to feel right at home within the pageant industry and I intend to stick around. I am the luckiest girl in the world to have been presented with some amazing opportunities in my life, however none of these would be meaningful if I hadn't have been surrounded by my irreplaceable friends and I am sure they will be with me every step of the way!

MISS UNIVERSE GREAT BRITAIN 2011 CONTESTANT - Lisa Fry

Hi, my name is Lisa. I’m 21-years old and I live in East-London with my partner who I’ve been with for three years. I’m proud to say that I have an edgy look and tattoos - which doesn’t make me more or less beautiful than the other girls - but I’m confident that I bring a uniqueness to this competition. I’ve been a model for the past five years. I love modelling but I also have a huge passion for animals. Over the past year I have saved enough money to enable me to do something I’ve always wanted to do. In the summer I’ll be volunteering in South Africa at an animal sanctuary belonging to the Kruger National Park. I want to represent Great Britain in the Miss Universe competition because my goals are to really make a change and winning this competition would give me a public voice and put me in a position from which these goals can realistically be achieved. I am a confident independent woman and I have the drive and ambition it takes to be a true Miss Universe.'

MISS UNIVERSE GREAT BRITAIN 2011 CONTESTANT - Sarah Finlay

I am proud to be in the finals of Miss Universe GB and would be both humbled and delighted to represent Great Britain in the international final of Miss Universe. I believe this is the greatest country in the world in which to live and I would passionately fly the flag for it. I am a businesswoman with my own chocolate company, Miss Coco, and I have just won a top BT award for being the most visionary new young entrepreneur in Scotland. I am backed by the Prince Scottish Youth Business Trust and have spent the last year building up my company from scratch. I have a small factory where I create and produce about 20 different lines which I market and distribute myself - with the help of the Miss Coco girls - my friends from the modelling business. I have been shortlisted for a Young Scot of the Year award. I am an honours geography graduate and when I’m not making chocolate I love horseriding and diving. I am a country girl at heart and there’s nothing I like better than walking my dogs over the hills, Thistle, my Springer spaniel and Scout, an incredibly cowardly Great Dane. Scooby Doo look out.

MISS UNIVERSE GREAT BRITAIN 2011 CONTESTANT - Kiera Anne Donnelly

I am an outgoing, creative and driven individual, who enjoys the challenges that life throws at me! (If it were straightforward it wouldn’t be very interesting would it?!) I enjoy singing, dancing and generally entertaining an audience. I enjoy meeting new people and experiencing new cultures and the traditions that accompany them. One of my favourite pastimes is spending time with my family, who I am very humbled by and value the importance of their role within my life. It is important to have strong figures surrounding you and guiding you forwards and it is these people that help to mould you into the person whom you wish to become. Since obtaining a Bachelors Degree in Musical Theatre from Buckinghamshire New University, I have been competing and performing both locally and nationally in numerous singing and dancing events. I have a constant desire to learn and develop, not only in terms of attaining knowledge through study, but also through life experience. It is this notion that has fuelled my desire to become a primary school teacher; a position in society which is one of the most influential upon our future generations. I hope that with my enthusiasm for personal development that I can bring something interesting and engaging to the classroom. It is also for this reason that I am most excited about the prospect of obtaining the title of Miss Universe; the hope that such a position will allow me to broaden the scale of people who I can reach with.

MISS UNIVERSE GREAT BRITAIN 2011 CONTESTANT - Natasha Crook

I grew up in Cobham in Surrey with my father and brother. I was very lucky to receive a great education, which led to me achieving an all rounder scholarship to my secondary school where I left with three A-levels. For me, sport and performing arts were a huge part of my school life and at the age of 15 I became a national champion of butterfly. Singing and music in particular is a huge passion of mine and it led me on to study at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music (BIMM) where I completed a degree in Professional musicianship specialising in singing. At the same time, I also worked as a session artist for a selection of BMG producers. My first major job after leaving BIMM was working for a music website where I was literally thrown into the deep end and asked to interview A list artists such as Craig David, WetWetWet, Boyz 11 Men and many more. This sparked a huge passion in me for presenting and has been there ever since as I now work as a full-time website presenter and model. My real dream is to work as a travel presenter as I love to experience different cultures, food and wine. My mother nworks as cabin crew for British airways and as a child I was able to travel with her all around the world. I am incredibly focused and determined to win Miss Universe GB and I feel it is a fantastic opportunity. I am grateful and honored to be a part of it.

MISS UNIVERSE GREAT BRITAIN 2011 CONTESTANT - Rosie Colicci

I have always thought myself to be a very ambitious and determined girl. However, that can sometimes mean I’m overly ambitious and have my head in the clouds! As true as that may be, I am very proud to have already set up two businesses: one challenging but successful and the other in the process of opening. This has come from my early working life with the family mobile events catering business, which taught me how to obtain and maintain business, clients and the general obstacles in business. As time consuming and challenging that these projects may be, I have always found time to pursue my hobbies - ironically these days they coincide with business. In the past three years, I have obtained qualifications in make up artistry, session hair stylist, beauty therapy, and nutrition all of which I enjoy immensely. I am an avid dancer and spent my teenage years learning disco, street, popping, jazz, modern, tap and hip hop. Unfortunately, life took me down different avenues and lost sight of my dream of becoming a professional dancer. It remains, however, my main passion in life and still captures my imagination. It is my ambition to get more involved in the charity and help as much as possible.

I am an ambitious, determined, motivated, strong and loving young woman, with an outgoing personality. Last summer, I made history by being the first profoundly deaf woman to win a place in the finals of the Miss England beauty contest, and achieved a place in the final 20, after being awarded the title of Miss Eco 2010. The BBC programme See Hear, featured this, which was a very exciting honour. I have never let my hearing impairment prevent me from setting and fulfilling personal goals and I believe my outlook on life has helped me put number of achievements under my belt, of which I am extremely proud. I am very grateful for the support my friends and family have given me throughout my life and truly believe that we can only give away to others what we have inside ourselves. To have been selected to be in the final for Miss Universe GB 2011 is a great honour and is an amazing opportunity for me to fulfil many more dreams and aspirations.

I am truly honoured to be given the opportunity of competing for the Miss Universe GB 2011 title! This will be my first ever competition! After secondary school, I achieved my National Diploma in Fine Art followed by my bachelor degree in Fine Art Printmaking at The University of Brighton. I became a volunteer in Tanzania during my summer holidays where I raised money and helped build a school for the under privileged local children of Rau. I have three jobs to pay the bills. I currently work as a Land Referencer where I studied and gained a Certificate in Land Law and will soon be training as a croupier. I also do promotional work and work in a pub. As a dyslexia sufferer I have had to overcome this disability, which has been hard and would love to show people that anyone can achieve anything no matter what their disability is. I am a happy, outgoing, giving person and love sporting activities. I also find time to run to raise money for many charities and I train in Muay Thai. I think every woman should learn a mixed martial art for self-defence. I stand for the ‘today’ woman: independent and hard working.

MISS UNIVERSE GREAT BRITAIN 2011 CONTESTANT - Jenna Avent

My greatest passions in life are food, modelling and travelling. I am a passionate foodie and during the last two years, I have combined professional modelling both with giving nutritional advice to models as well as working part time for the food ethics council; an NGO which campaigns for a better, fairer food system for everyone. I have also indulged my passion for travel through modelling, with agencies representing me in both Morocco and Hong Kong. I would love to compete in Miss Universe because of the opportunity to support The Joshua Foundation. Before modelling, I worked for two years in the health sector, conducting market research for new cancer drugs. Ever since, I have remained interested in supporting cancer-related causes, including modelling at the cancer research UK fashion show and organising fundraising coffee and cake mornings. Outside modelling, I am a trained dental nurse and hold an undergraduate degree in human biology. I am also a keen skier and snowboarder, and love to play team sports with friends. I also love cats, and when they aren’t causing mischief, I enjoy snuggling up to my two cats on the sofa to unwind at the end of the day.

MISS UNIVERSE GREAT BRITAIN 2011 CONTESTANT - Laura Ashfield

My name is Laura Ashfield, I am from Basingstoke and I have lived here all my life. I attended Bodywork Cambridge Performing Arts were I studied for four years gaining a National Diploma in Musical Theatre. I am currently a dance teacher at Rhythm Central Dance School Basingstoke, teaching various classes, ages 3 -16. Teaching has given me a great opportunity to share my passion and enthusiasm of dance to my students. I am proud of the high standard in the class and I have learned that dance is truly infectious. I have recently just been accepted onto a new agency and have become a full time model. I feel that modelling has given me confidence and will help me to develop my skills further. I have worked for various charities including The Variety Club, Make A Wish Foundation and NSPCC. I have helped raise funds for all these charities which has all gone to great causes and it gives me great pleasure to know I have helped to put a smile on children's faces. I am currently working on a project for The Joshua Foundation. I feel I would be a good ambassador for Great Britain as I am confident, kind, caring and always put 100% into everything I do.

MISS UNIVERSE GREAT BRITAIN 2011 CONTESTANT - Hilary Arredondo

My Name is Hilary Arredondo and I am 20 years old. My passion for athletics has enabled me to represent my borough and county for athletics competitions, more specifically middle distant races since I was 12 years of age. Athletics has moulded me into a positive minded individual having a sense of self-belief, a great deal of determination, and more importantly the key to overcoming hardships. By the end of my Sport Science and Business Honours Degree, I hope to use my studies in the sport industry, managing and developing sport to help young people. My family is very important aspect to me - through them, my Columbian heritage and strong Catholic background - I have established the strong moral values and foundations to make me the person I am today. I am a friendly, fun-loving and warm-hearted girl, I love to go out with friends, and most of all I am very down to earth.
